This morning, I would like to share some thoughts about how to have a peaceful and happy partnership. With luck, it will take my mind off the fight I?m having with my spouse.
Over the years, I?ve learned one or two things about how to make a relationship go smoothly. After three decades of dating and/or marriage one or two things aren?t bad. What I?ve learned, and you might want to write this down, is this: Relationships are tricky.
The problem in my house this morning was that issue that raises its ugly head in every long-term relationship. One of us left a towel on the bathroom floor.
It is absolutely true that, whatever unhappy thing your partner has said recently about your sister or however much you?ve stewed about the time he/she spends playing golf, your frustration is going to come out over something that: a) is trivial, and b) has nothing to do with what you?re really upset about.
In short, in relationships, the shit hits the fan when the towel hits the floor.
Let?s look at how two people faced with this relationship annoyance might handle the situation. First, the person who is confident in themselves and their place in the partnership. This person sees the towel on the floor, knows it has nothing to do with other relationship issues and says something like, ?Honey, you?ve left a towel on the bathroom floor.?
Notice there are key words this relationship pro does not use. Words like ?again, ? ?never, ? ?always? and ?you stupid twit.? The words ?never? and ?always? have likely caused more relationship trouble than even, ?Everyone gains weight at your age, ? or, ?You said it was healthy to acknowledge our attraction to other people.?
Next, we have the person we?ll refer to as ?the rest of us.? This person uses the most common strategy for dealing with relationship discord. This may be called ?taking it all personally.?
TRoU: I cannot believe you did this to me again. You never, never think of me and always, always leave your towel on the floor. I am so leaving you for someone who showers at the gym.
When it comes to relationships, it?s best to remember two things. First, instead of getting a marriage licence, we should all be issued a learner?s permit.
And the best things in life are free. But they?re never easy.
